  • New better Internet – 200Mbps symetrical bandwidth

New better Internet – 200Mbps symetrical bandwidth

The earlier days of the Internet here in Adelaide, we had quite good internet. Starting with SENET we progressed quickly from 14,4kbps to 28.8kbps, then 56kbps. We where paying $1/hour which was common among many. It was also true local with Camtech, Internode, Edge, Boldweb, Kern and a few more.

When we moved into our house in Banksia Park, we moved to Internode’s ADSL but that was not to good as we where a long way from the exchange meaning at best we had 1.5mbps but normally closer to 900kbps which was still faster than 56kbps.

It was about 2 years and we connected to Telstra’s cable internet which gave us 10Mbps. One thing to note, it was symetrical, ie 10 down and 10 up. After about a year we dropped the Internode ADSL connection as Telstra was quite reliable at the time.

Anyway not long before NBN, Telstra increased the speed of the cable where we would regulary get 120Mbps down and 55Mbps up. Once NBN took over our cable went down to 100/40 with Telstra. Then Telstra really mucked up, they quitly changed the upload in thier T’s and C’s to what we see today and they introduced the 700/40 as the fastest available. 100 down is more than enough for what we do.

When they changed that in a sly way, we dropped them after being customer for 20+ years and went to Internode with thier 100/36 (advertised as 40). Internode where an Adelaide based company which is what drove me to use them. But now they have closed up in Adelaide so no more loyalty from me. Time to find something new.

So started looking at NBN Enterprise Ethernet 100/100 offering which is $400/month for 36 months with no setup. In my hunt I stumbled on Telair who are selling Telstra Business Fibre. They had a special offer if you sign up, you get 200Mbps/200Mbps for the price of 100Mbps/100Mbps. which is $382/month. Not much to think about! Sold! So looking forward to the speed boost, especially the upload. It’s also dedicated fibre to me, it’s not shared with anyone else. AND we’re no longer using NBN. This is a great leap forward.

Some photo’s from 2014 that are memorable to me

2014 was probably the most turbulent year of my life. The following photo’s are highlights of that year. Click on image to expand.

Recent road trip along the Ocean Road in Victoria I stopped for breakfast at this picnic ground in Lorne. It’s the perfect place for a stop, beautiful scenery, sounds, and smells. Spectacular 🙂

Located on the Ayre Penninsula, South Australia, this beautiful bay is a haven for boaties, fisherman and other water lovers. The bay has almost no waves from the Southern Ocean leaving a glass like surface.

    Port Adelaide Alley
An alley way in Port Adelaide, South Australia. Port Adelaide is one of the early parts of Adelaide with a lot of factories built in the 1800’s that still stand. Most are converted now to apartments and offices. This photo was a bit of a challenge because of the high contrast between light and dark.

  • Plane crashes on landing at Adelaide Airport, South Australia

Plane crashes on landing at Adelaide Airport, South Australia

Adelaide, South Australia – Saturday 27th September 2008

In front of about a thousand spectators, the King Air B200 Twin Engine Corporate Charter VH-URU on a charter flight from Adelaide to Kangaroo Island crash landed on Runway 30 (South East to North West runway). No-one was injured with passengers praising the work of the pilot.

The large crowd was at the airport to see the new Qantas A380 Airbus arrive for the first time at Adelaide and where treated to a perfectly executed crash landing of the twin engine King Air.

It circled the airport for some 30 minutes to burn of fuel before doing a low level pass along the runway to steady in the gusty winds before landing on its belly skidding to a very quick stop.

The video shows the approach and crash followed by the passengers escaping and emergency services quickly approaching. Sorry for the slightly bumpy footage. It was really an opportunistic shoot with no time to set up with tripod etc as I’m sure you can imagine.

  • New version of Banksia Park Weather online!

Click here for Banksia Park Weather
Finally got around to changing the Banksia Park Weather Station site to its new version moving the Flash movie off to a sub page and using JavaScript to keep the ‘static’ page updated every 25 seconds. It’s got more features and more useful areas including a longer range forecast from Weather Underground, access to radar, warnings from the BOM, and will allow me to grow the informational part of the site that explains weather in simple terms. The version on-line now is just the start.

So if you’re living in any of the following suburbs, it’s probably the closest site to get temperature, humidity, barometer or pressure, wind direction and speed, and a whole host of other information on the weather :

  • Adelaide On-Site Towbar Fitting

I had a towbar fitted to my car a while ago. After ringing around, I settled on Adelaide On-Site Towbar Fitting, a mobile come to you company. Mistake. There is nothing worse when you pay a professional to do a job and then you find out they have wired your car wrong. Go to pick up a new trailer about 40km away and as soon as you plug it in and push the brakes, the fuse blows.

Luckily a little electrical knowledge found the problem where Adelaide On-Site Towbar Fitting had wired the brake (red wire) and the earth (white wire) the wrong way around.

So how would you go if it was you? Do you have the knowledge to figure it out on the road side?

The company I’m talking about is Adelaide On-Site Towbar Fitting with the slogan We Come To You  Towbars. They are located at 91 Philip Hwy, Elizabeth South, SA , 5112, Australia. Their phone numbers are Ph: (08) 8235 2977, Other: 0418 817 025, Mobile: 0418 817 025 and they have an AH Contact of (08) 8287 3992.

Handy as they come to you to fit the towbar. Price is the same as taking your car somewhere. Quality, well..

I just don’t understand why they don’t test there work.

    Jet Action 2007

26 May 2007 at the Adelaide Model Aerosport Field, Monarto, South Australia

My first visit to Jet Action was no disappointment. With great weather, clear skies, slight wind from the north and a top temp of about 21 Celsius the day was of to a great start. A few friends also turned out along with my brother and my son.

The action started very soon after we got there at 10AM with the first and only crash of the day. F-18 Hornet suffered a problem with the radio gear resulting in the engine shutting down just over the field leaving the pilot struggling to wipe of speed and get the plane down as quickly as possible. Anyway, you can see the video here:

It wasn’t to long after that we had Peter Agnew’s Navy Panther jet on the runway and doing some circuits of the field. These things are expensive. At some $20,000 plus 300 hours of labour, it’s not something that you crash. Anyway, for your enjoyment you can see it in action.

This pilot/plane was probably the highlight of the day. A jet doing things that I have never imagined a jet can do, like stand on end still in mid air and hold it there. I’ve seen this done with other aircraft but as soon as they stall at the top of the climb, they fall over and head back to earth. You just need to take a look. I think you will be amazed.

This next video is a very well built aircraft. It’s an F16 that looks so much like the real thing you won’t notice it’s not until something puts it’s size into perspective. Have a look.

Don’t forget to check out the pics in the Gallery.

It’s also worth having a look at the Adelaide Model Aerosport site and their Jet Action 2007 section in their picture gallery
